Over centuries, the surfaces of these walls have been slowly eroding, turning into dust. Although loose from the walls, the dust is still part of the material history and significance of this place. Ancient Nasjdi builders constructed At-Turaif out of the earthen dust found on site, mixing it with the precious water from Wadi Hanifa to make bricks for walls. The outer surfaces of these earthen walls were designed to erode naturally with the yearly rains, and to be replenished seasonally with a new protective layer of wet earth, which is why they are called “sacrificial layers.” These sacrificial layers are where human hands, earthen architecture and environmental dust physically meet in cyclical acts of care, which continue to this day. I preserved earthen dust fallen from the walls of At-Turaif in a glass vessel shaped like a brick. It is a work in dialogue with the generations of caregivers that have preserved At-Turaif, from the original Nasjdi builders to the contemporary conservators. To save the original dust is to spark the imagination that it could one day become At-Turaif walls again, in a cycle of regeneration. He employs artistic methods, informed by advanced technologies, materials research, and interdisciplinary collaborations to expand the range of objects that are valued as cultural heritage, and to develop new ways of caring for those objects. His wide-ranging artistic practice finds expression through materials like airborne atmospheric dusts, smells, sounds, and architectural fragments. His series "The Ethics of Dust" turned experimental preservation cleaning techniques into a signature aesthetic, creating large scale latex casts from the dust and pollution residues found on landmarked monuments. His practice highlights how the dusts sedimented on buildings function as repositories of previously unexamined environmental histories and collective memories. His works have been commissioned by and exhibited at major heritage sites, museums, foundations, and biennials, including Artangel’s public art commission at the UK Parliament, the Chicago Architecture Biennale (2017), Venice Art Biennale (2009), V&A Museum, Louis Vuitton Galerie Museum, Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary, SFMoMA, Hong Kong’s Tai Kwun Centre for Heritage and Arts, Frieze London, and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts among others. He is the recipient of a 2021-22 American Academy in Rome Residency in the visual arts. As a preservation architect, Otero-Pailos collaborates on the creative restoration and interpretation of landmark sites. Notably, Otero-Pailos achieved an award-winning restoration of New Holland Island in St. Petersburg, Russia, in partnership with WorkAC, and most recently, the restoration of the Eero Saarinen designed U.S. Embassy in Oslo (1959) in collaboration with Erik Langdalen as preservation architects, and Lund Hagem/Atelier Oslo as lead architects. Alongside his art and preservation practices, he is Director and Professor of Historic Preservation at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation (GSAPP), where he also directs the Columbia Preservation Technology Lab, and where he founded the US’s first PhD program in Historic Preservation (2017). He is the founder (2004) and editor-in-chief of Future Anterior, editor of Historic Preservation Theory: An Anthology (2023), co-editor of Experimental Preservation (2016), co-author with Rem Koolhaas of Preservation is Overtaking US (2014), and author of Architecture’s Historical Turn (2010). The words A Library of Earthen Architectures were written by the artist on the front vertical glass panel, and the artist’s signature appears on the right side glass panel. “I am drawn to the dusty surface materiality of the earthen walls of At-Turaif. Over centuries, the surfaces of these walls have been slowly eroding, turning into dust. Although loose from the walls, the dust is still part of the material history and significance of this place. Ancient Nasjdi builders constructed At-Turaif out of the earthen dust found on site, mixing it with the precious water from Wadi Hanifa to make bricks for walls. The outer surfaces of these earthen walls were designed to erode naturally with the yearly rains, and to be replenished seasonally with a new protective layer of wet earth, which is why they are called “sacrificial layers.” These sacrificial layers are where human hands, earthen architecture and environmental dust physically meet in cyclical acts of care, which continue to this day. I preserved earthen dust fallen from the walls of At-Turaif in a glass vessel shaped like a brick. It is a work in dialogue with the generations of caregivers that have preserved At-Turaif, from the original Nasjdi builders to the contemporary conservators. To save the original dust is to spark the imagination that it could one day become At-Turaif walls again, in a cycle of regeneration. Jorge Otero-Pailos is a member of the Academy of Arts and Sciences of Puerto Rico, and has received awards from major art, architecture, and preservation organizations, including the Kress Foundation, the Graham Foundation, the Fitch Foundation, the Canadian Center for Architecture, UNESCO, and the American Institute of Architects. He studied architecture at Cornell University and earned a doctorate in architecture at M.I.T. This image represents pieces of Sharafiyah glass, an artifact chosen by the Bricklab team, Turki Gazzaz and Abdulrahman Gazzaz, for the participation in the art installation A Library of Earthen Architectures by Jorge Otero-Pailos. These glass fragments are referred to as Shafi glass, which was commonly used in residential buildings in Jeddah during the 1970s and 1980s. These pieces were collected from various locations in Jeddah, particularly as older neighborhoods are being demolished. The glass has a distinctive industrial pattern that evokes strong memories of the built environment in Saudi Arabia, representing a period of modern urban development. This glass was used to allow light into buildings while maintaining privacy, and it is now rare to find intact due to its fragility. This artifact was selected to highlight the often overlooked or “dispensable” aspects of modern Saudi architecture and urban history. For the Bricklab team, the glass fragments represent a moment of rapid transformation in Saudi cities, where contemporary and traditional urban forms coexist. Over centuries, the surfaces of these walls have been slowly eroding, turning into dust. Although loose from the walls, the dust is still part of the material history and significance of this place. Ancient Nasjdi builders constructed At-Turaif out of the earthen dust found on site, mixing it with the precious water from Wadi Hanifa to make bricks for walls. The outer surfaces of these earthen walls were designed to erode naturally with the yearly rains, and to be replenished seasonally with a new protective layer of wet earth, which is why they are called “sacrificial layers.” These sacrificial layers are where human hands, earthen architecture and environmental dust physically meet in cyclical acts of care, which continue to this day. I preserved earthen dust fallen from the walls of At-Turaif in a glass vessel shaped like a brick. It is a work in dialogue with the generations of caregivers that have preserved At-Turaif, from the original Nasjdi builders to the contemporary conservators. To save the original dust is to spark the imagination that it could one day become At-Turaif walls again, in a cycle of regeneration.
