Polytechnic holds architecture conference, plans workshops

The Polytechnic University's New School of Architecture, directed by architect Jorge Rigau, last week sponsored a symposium on "Re-Envisioning San Juan: Architecture, Identity Politics." The unprecedented event was chaired by Profs. Jorge Otero-Pailos, of the Polytechnic University, and Vrikramaditya Prakash, of the University of Washing- ton, a prepared statement said.

Throughout the week, participants held discussions and public debates framed by the New School's innovative Architecture curriculum, which incorporates issues of identity and culture into its pedagogy. Participants included architectural theorists Mark Wigley, of Princeton University, and Mark Jarzombek, of MIT.

Also participating were Latin American urbanism historian Sergio Palleroni, of the University of Washington, and political scientist Susan Buck-Morss of Cornell University, among others.

The symposium was held in preparation for much larger workshops to be held at the university in January, the statement said.
