Dr. Otero-Pailos is a registered architect (USA, Spain, and Puerto Rico) based in New York specializing in architectural solutions to the problems that arise when historic, cultural, and ecological environments face the pressure to change. Because they are often poorly understood these important environmental resources tend to be undervalued and vulnerable. Yet, as any other physical entity, they are constantly changing. Our philosophy is to make small interventions that change with their environment, and that therefore resonate at larger scales. We oppose the extremes of shortsighted utopianism, of those that try to embalm the world, of those that seek to replace it for the sake of "art" or "newness," and of those that are unwilling or unable to find the potential in the changing things that surround us. Our projects unfold from careful historical research to reinterpret the significance and heighten the value of the contexts they participate in. Our areas of specialization include eco-resorts, interpretation centers, museums, exhibition spaces, and the re-use of historic buildings and landscapes.
